"M" marks the spot
Like a secret code found in a mytery novel, a mystifying “M” is marked on the façade of a nondescript city building. If you’ve only just heard of a new wine bar and restaurant discretely tucked away in Makati’s business district, this is the only clue that you’ve come to the right place. Masseto quietly opened in late 2009 and quickly established a reputation as a wine connoisseur’s urban oasis. Close to eight hundred bottles are displayed on the specially built wine chillers, lining almost an entire wall. “ We have over three hundred types of wine, representing at least twenty varietals from twenty wine-growing regions, both from the Old and New World.” Says Masseto’s executive chef, Tippi Tambunting. To go with this extraordinary selection of wine, the U.S.-trained Tambunting has prepared an excellent menu, the fare ranging from light bar snacks to full course meals. Her Chorizzo Frittata and Bacalao Fritters are both excellent starters, whetting the appetite for more. For mains, the Crispy Duck Leg, Pork Belly and Grilled Garoupa are not to be missed. The ambiance plays a good part in the enjoyment of the food and wine. The interiors, done mostly in auber-Sonia Olivares & Associates. She took inspiration from the gentlemen’s clubs of old, but gave it a softer, modern look. “There’s a notion that wine is enjoyed mostly by men, but I wanted the place to appeal to both men and women,” says Co. Banquettes covered in real leather and the traditional wing chairs, although made in smaller scale and covered in plush fabric, provide comfortable seating. Strategically placed mirrors make the place appear much larger than it really is, and a pocket garden reflected on the wall just beyond the bar often tricks diners into thinking that is actually planted indoors. Signs of a well-executed design, perhaps, but that could also be just the wine talking. Cheers!
